The Importance of Sound in Film:
Sound is used in film to establish tone, atmosphere and to help give the audience clues about the plot, characters or to identify the Genre of the film. It is also used to help 'suspend belief' to create realism for the viewer and heighten their experience of the film.
There have been many developments in sound and sound design over the course of film history and we now have the technology to ensure that a films sound is a 3 dimensional, visceral experience that makes the film as enjoyable to hear as it is to watch.
When watching The Taking of Pelham 123 title sequence without sound, i felt very bored and had no idea what was happening nor did i have an idea of the genre the movie was. There was also a lot of jumping around from place to place.
However when there was sound it was a lot more entertaining and i almost immediately realized what the genre of the movie was. it made me feel more engaged knowing exactly what was happening and the jump scenes were more discrete because they blended in with the sound.
There are many sound effects that are stereotyped to belonging to specific genres in film such as; Western films stereo-typically having a whistle tune with horses in the background and usually gun shots, Action movies usually include guns in the sounds as well as the use of fast paced music. This is the reason why I believe sound is so important to title sequences.
